Richard and Sarah along with six of their children - John Wheelock, Stephen Hamilton, James Madison, Hiram Fellows and two infants - lie in the Estherville Cemetery, 55000 Glen Erie Line, Bayham, ON.

Richard owned a large portion of land on the southwest corner of Tunnel Line and Stafford Road, just outside of Vienna, ON. He ran a sawmill there which formed the beginnings of the Otter Valley Settlement - also known as McCurdy's Corners. The hamlet consisted of the sawmill, hotel, school and church. At first the sawmill was operated with a water-powered vertical saw, but as business grew it was converted to steam power.
